William A. Motta

William A. Motta (1934 – 2020) was an American artist and one of the leading figures in automotive fine art. After graduating from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles in 1957, he began a long association with the renowned automotive magazine Road & Track, where he worked for four decades, from 1959 until his retirement in 2000.

From 1969 to 1988, Motta served as the magazine's Art Director and later contributed to a number of special automotive publications and annual editions. In 1997, he published 50 Years of Road & Track: The Art of the Automobile, a visual history of the magazine featuring illustrations, photography and technical drawings.

Motta was also a co-founder of the Automotive Fine Arts Society (AFAS), an organisation that played an important role in establishing automotive art as a recognised artistic genre. Throughout his career, he served as an official artist for prestigious events including the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance and Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este.

His works are held in numerous private and corporate collections worldwide, including those of Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Audi and Subaru. Through his artwork and long-standing involvement in the automotive world, Motta made a significant contribution to the development and recognition of automotive fine art.
